How to Choose your Domain Name

It is necessary to take into consideration a few points while choosing a name for your domain. A catchy word or a phrase may be coined to name the domain. It is best to brainstorm five to ten top keywords, simple household words that would best describe your domain. When the list is ready play with your creativity using combinations of pairing with prefixes and suffixes.

  1. Here size matters… the shorter the better ;-) … though short domain names are a little difficult to find.
  2. It is best if the name is closely related to your business as well as the relevant search keywords. The former helps attracting business because the offline branding will lead to online earnings. The latter helps get better ranking in the search engines.
  3. Names should be easy and simple to remember so that visitors do not have to spend  time and effort to look for what they want. It should be easy to type also.
  4. The extension is important. A .com is usually opted first while searching . So a .com or .org is more competitive than a .net, .au etc.
  5. It is best to avoid similarities. If you chose some name similar to one who is already there then they become your competitor because the visitor is confused while searching.
  6. It is good idea to avoid fancy spellings combining numbers and letters, like 4 instead of for, 2 instead of to, or u for you and the like.
  7. Avoid trademarked names. Spend on a good domain name but not on lawyers!
  8. It is a good idea to register for more than one name. For instance yourcompany.com, yourcompany.net and yourcompany.org. Several domains can point to the same website. This way you are likely to attract more traffic.
  9. Talking of traffic, names which have a good traffic history are any day a better bet.
  10. Domain names are not case sensitive. One could use letters, numbers and dashes but spaces and symbols are not accepted.
  11. When you have shortlisted the names you like, it doesn’t hurt to ask your clients and friends about what they have to say. What sounds perfect to you may not sound so to others.
  12. Make sure your domain name makes sense and is self-revealing without your having to explain. When a visitor hears about your site name, they should straight away be able to guess what to expect inside your site.
